My Favorite Movies Of 2015
This is a pretty self explanetory article, yes? I am going to be sharing with you my top 10 favorite movies of the year. I love my list and I trust that everyone is smart enough to realize that this is my opinion and also that I haven't seen every single movie that came out last year and so you may be shocked that a few movies aren't on my list but that may be because I haven't seen them. (Some movies that are supposed to be really great but I haven't seen them so they just won't be on this list are Creed, The Revenant and Ex Machina) The point of this article/list is to have fun and to celebrate some of the best pieces of cinema to come out last year. I'm really excited about my list so let's go!!
P.S I will try my best not to spoil anything, but if there are spoilers in a paragraph I will indicate it. Enjoy

Age of Ultron
(Spoiler warning. I will be talking about Age Of Ultron in detail. But who am I kidding, everyone's seen this movie.)
Why do people not like this movie?! This is among my top 3 Marvel Movies and I love it. Its such a funny movie first of all. This, I feel was the first Marvel movie in a long time that has lots of laughs without overdoing it. The first Avangers movie is the first one to come to mind in terms of overdoing it. Also, the story is fanominal! It adds a lot to Tony's characters by making him the one to come up with the idea to create Ultron. We get to see his thought process about the world, how he sees it crumbling around him and all he wanted to do was protect it. And then it all goes to hell. Ultron decides that he wants to put an end to human kind. It's a great story! This movie also introduces us to three interesting new characters. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are done really well here! Their relationship is portrayed well with lines like Pietro reminding his sister that he's older than her. And when he dies, it is truly sad. It gave this movie a really great emotional punch which I really hope they don't ruin by bringing him back. Marvel is very guilty of bringing dead characters back and it's ruining their films these days because a lot of the time the heart of a movie is a certain character that bites it. For example Colson in The Avengers. His death was good, but now it means nothing because he's fine! He's got his own show and everything. The Avangers is a less impactful movie because of that. And I really hope that Pietro stays dead to keep some consequences into this universe and to be the motivater for Wanda's character. Vision is also a new character that I really thought was well handled. I love that he was created to originally be the new body for Ultron. This movie is also full of great moments. Like when the rest of the Avengers are trying to pick up Mjolnir and Steve is pulling and Thor gives that look. That's SO great. And then later Vision picks it up and just hands it to Thor. All doubts about the character of the Vision were permanently erased right then and there. Also when Ultron is threatening Natasha and and another suit rips the one that was talking to her apart from the back and keeps talking. The ongoing joke about bad language. The "didn't see that coming" thing between Pietro and Clint. Wanda showing Ultron what it felt like when Pietro died. All these great moments adds up to an experience that sets up more movies to come without forgetting to be a good movie on its own. The Amazing Spider Man 2 was one of these movies. But Age Of Ultron is up there for best Marvel movies in my book. It fits right into the universe and I cannot WAIT for Civil War!

Bridge of Spies
Bridge of Spies is ultimately a war movie except it doesn't include any scenes in a which a gun is fired. (Well, okay, there is one scene, but the point is it's a cold war movie that focuses more on the espionage side of the war and less on the combat) And that premise is just fascinating to me. You have a movie about the biggest form of conflict that there can possibly be, where whole entire countries are going up against each other and it's all done in speaking and espionage. Another film that does this was last year's The Imitation Game, but I feel that the heart of that movie was more focused on Alan as a character and less on the war. But Bridge of Spies is a complete espoinage, thriller. And it is the most subtle movie I have ever scene that I still consider a thriller. I was just entranced with the story of a soviet soldier that is captured in the U.S and is going to be given a trial.
Tom Hanks plays a lawyer that is chosen to be the one to defend the spy. Naturally, everyone in America instantly hates him because of the fact that he is fighting for the man to not be executed. His character believes that everyone deserves a chance and Tom Hanks does an excellent job of portraying a character that, at first, doesn't want to defend the soviet spy. But over time, he grows to realize that this man was just doing what he was supposed to. He was serving his country just like an Amercan soldier would. This brings me to the plot point in which an American spy is captured in Russia and now we have a prisoner exchange story. And I mentioned Tom Hanks but I really have to adress him more, he was fantastic! And so is everyone, really, but a stand-out was the soviet spy. He does a great job as well. His preformance is so subtle and it really works for his character. The script is excellent as well. There's a line exchange that happenes between Tom Hanks and his client that happens in multiple times of the movie. "You're not scared?" "Would it help?" The relationship and respect that forms between these two characters is beautiful. It's just so well written and it was one of those movies that is directed in a way that is just so intriguing and... I just...I can't describe it. It is a Steven Spielberg masterpiece and easily one of his best.

Mssion Impossible: Rogue Nation
I went into Rogue Nation wanting a fun, entertaining, well made film that gave me a good time. Guess what I got. Exactly that. I had a lot of fun with Rogue Nation. It was well made, had lots of nail biting sequences (even though I don't really do that. I'm more of a lip biter I think... anyway) and tons of fresh ideas that kept me interested in what was going to happen next. The fight in the opera house, the plane sequence, the water scene, the bike chase, there's so many to name, and they're all handled with great camerawork, riveting cinematography, great coreography and really well done physical acting and times where you just laugh and smile at something awesome that just happened. By the time I left the theatre, my bottom lip was ripped to shreds. And that's one of the best compliments you can give a movie like this. In terms of fun movie-going experiences, Rogue Nation delievers and this franchise is only getting better. (also this is Zach's favorite movie of all time so I'm pretty sure I would kicked off of ZachLogic if I didn't include it on my list)

Inside Out
Inside Out is a genius animation by Pixar that tells the story of Riley, a girl who is about 12 years old who moves to San Fransisco and we get to see her emotions portrayed as characters as Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust and Anger try to cope with the move. This, movie, is, brilliant. It shines out from past Pixar animations with its originality, its complexity and the ways it explains things that we are all familiar with. Like how a happy memory can turn into a sad memory. Or how a personality trait that you had before can vanish and dissapear sometimes. It's such a genius concept and the characters are so funny and heartfelt. And hands up if you either cried or were super close to crying when Bing Bong was forgotten. Yeah. It is a very very good movie with the signature feel of Pixar's originality and charm. It's hilarious, it's sad, it's magical, the animation is incredible, the story is brilliant and I'm so happy Pixar still makes movies like this.

When Marnie Was There
If When Marnie Was There really is Studhio Ghibli's last film, I am not at all dissapointed. When Marnie Was There (or in Japanese 'Omoide No Marnie') is the story of a young girl who is very very introverted. She also has very bad asthma and so her parents send her away from the city to a more healthy, clean-aired countryside in Japan for a few weeks. She is staying with some family friends when she becomes entranced by a mysterious house in the marsh. She sees a blond girl in the house and is suddenly unable to explain why she is constantly drawn to her and that house all the time. And from there, When Marnie Was There becomes a beautiful mystery story as you slowly piece together what the meaning of this house and this girl is. Honestly even if the end completely sucked I would've still loved this movie because the journey to the discovery is to enticing and gorgeous it is just so stunning. But the thing is, the end doesn't suck. It all comes together in a storytelling fashion that I respect so much. The beautiful hand-drawn animation perfectly reflects the story of a girl trying to discover... certain things. (Oh, my god I shouldn't have made that promise not to spoil anything, this is maddening). It is just so sad and so well done, my eyes were watering by the end. It is a great movie and if you are a fan of anime, you should definitely watch this film and if you are a fan of just great filmaking in general, this is a truly great example of how complex and heart-renching animated films can and should be. This movie just gets better and better in my mind the more I think about it. Definitely check out When Marnie Was There.

The Martian
I had heard great things about the Martian and yes, it actually is that great. It is the story of Mark Watney, an astronaut that is killed in a big storm on Mars and his crew is forced to leave him behind. But, oh crap, he's not dead, and now, Mark is stranded on Mars and he must survive as NASA struggles to find a way to bring him home. This movie knocked, me, flat. It hits every single target a movie should. It looks great first of all. I never doubted that I was on Mars because the scenery just doesn't look like this planet. They did a great job finding the right locations to shoot and it payed off. Also this is easily the funniest movie I saw last year. But don't think that The Martian is a comedy. It is definitely a dramatic film as well and some of the situations, while familiar, are just done so well. This movie has my favorite preformance by a lead character this year as well. Matt Damon is, just so believable and great as this astronaut facing these enormous obstacles. And he is so, dang funny! Seriously! And so quotable as well. "Mars will come to fear my botany powers" "I am definitely going to die... If I have to listen to any more god-awful disco music. No, I am not going to turn the beat around, I refuse" "I am the greatest botanist on this planet" It's his sense of humor that drives him and makes this character so good and memorable for me. Because this film also gets very thoughtful sometimes. Mark reflects on how he is the first man to be on an entire planet, completely alone. Everywhere he goes he's the first one to be there. It's a fascinating premise. I was welling up at the sight of Mark Watney closing his eyes and crying at the thought of going home, I was pumping my fist at the sight of NASA celebrating whenever something went right and I was putting my hands on my forhead whenever something went wrong. The Martian is great.

4
The Revenant
The hardships that the crew of this film went through to get everything right in just the short window they had when the natural light was just right and the struggles with the incredibly harsh weather conditions payed off. The Revenant is beautiful with some of the longest sequences I have ever seen done with just one take, beautiful and harsh wilderness locations and extremely gritty/realistic and brutal violence. It all adds up to a final product that leaves me wondering how on earth they were able to accomplish such a high level of realisticness in the violent things Leonardo Dicaprio goes through. He deserved his Oscar, definitely. This story and film is so white-knuckled and brutal it is such a huge accomplishment in a world where most movies, the CGI is so painfully obvious. But here, the effects become a part of the film and I could not see past anything, it was all real in my mind. The bear scene in this movie is absolute perfection. That thing is ONE SHOT!!!

3
Spotlight
Truly a movie that deserves something at the Oscars, (probably should be something in the directing or acting categories) Spotlight made me like movies more. Like actually, I love filmaking even more after seeing this movie. It is directed very subtly and the preformances are so realistic for characters in this situation, the people on screen don't feel like characters at all. They feel like real people and that is what acting should do in a movie, make you believe that these are people. Every single one of these actors completely dissapeared into their roles perfectly. Spotlight has the best acting in a movie that I saw in 2015. As the story these reporters are writing just builds and builds to the climax, it's so tension filled and truly mesmirazing and also disturbing to know that this is a true story. And the ending of this movie is...perfect. And I'm getting down to specifics here. How it ends on Michael Keaton picking up a phone and muttering Spotlight. Oh, it's so good. My favorite moments of this film are when the characters realize how much bigger this case is than they thought. It's a great story with a great screenplay and awesome acting. Spotlight is my third favorite movie of 2015.

The Force Awakens
Spoilers!
From the moment this movie came out, I fell in love with it. This...movie...had...every...
single...thing...I...wanted...it...to...have. It had nostalgia, it had new stuff, it had everything. The new characters are well realized and exciting. This movie gave more development to characters we already knew and loved, mostly that of Han. It had excitment, it had laughs, it had tension. Kylo Ren is a great new character with awesome moments, so is BB-8 and Finn. Rey is great and I cannot WAIT to see what goes on with her storyline. Moments like BB-8 giving the thumbs up with the lighter, Han's death, Po and Finn saying "Good to meet you, Po!" "Good to meet you too, Finn!", Rey catching the lightsaber as it flies past Kylo, "We'll use the Force." "That's not how the Force works!", Kylo Ren pounding his chest to get his adrenaline and darkside power flowing or stopping Po's blaster bult in mid-air, Rey holding out Luke's lightsaber to him, Finn yelling "That's one hell of a pilot!", the stormtrooper screaming at Finn, "Traiter!" and Rey using a Jedi mind trick for the first time just brought it all home and fit into the Star Wars universe perfectly. I am overjoyed with how much I loved every single second of this film. It's well shot, it's fenominally acted, the effects are flawless, and the story is great. The only problems I have with this movie are things that are just a bit unexplained, or haven't been given enough time. Like how Captain Phasma does absolutely nothing or that Snoak is a bit confusing and kind of wiered and awkward as of right now and how R2 just kind of wakes up and helps conveniently just at the right time. But these are all things that, for all we know, will be explained and expanded in future installments. Man, I am so happy with the way this movie turned out. The excitement has been building since 1983 (way before I was even born!) and now we finally have a great Star Wars movie again! I can't believe I was alive to see this day and I am so excited for more awesome Star Wars entertainment in such a near future. We're home, indeed.

Mad Max: Fury Road
This is a movie that will stick with me forever. From the moment it begins, this is a 2 hour action thrillride. It is brutal, it is fast, it is epic. The story is great, following Furiosa, an imperator of the Citadel, a stronghold run by Immortan Joe a beastly and gruesome being that controls the people of the Citadel because he controls the massive water supply and keeps most of it for himself. Furiosa is on a mission to collect more gasaline when she suddenly goes off course. Immorton Joe soon figures out that Furiosa has taken the breeders of the Cidatel, his five wives to get away from that horrible place. He sends all of the persuit vehicles he has to go after Furiosa's rig and reclaim his property. Max has been captured and is being used as a blood bag for one of the war boys driving a persuit vehicle named Nux and from there comes the greatest action in a movie my eyes have ever seen. Everything about the way the action is directed, is perfect. It's intense, it's fast, it's destructive, it's furious! From the first shot of the movie, the first shot in the entire movie, I knew I was in for something. The title for this movie is perfect and everytime I think about the title card it is always preceeded by the shot of Max being dragged into a hole in the side of a mountain. It is so iconic and recognizable and the music as well. Oh, my god, the score for this film is perfect! I find myself humming it all the time and it's not just that the music is good and it fits the movie. The music in this film is used in such creative ways. Sometimes it's like the music is actually playing in the scene. There's a music rig (called the Doof Wagon apparently) and it is actually playing the music that you're hearing. The drummers beat furiously on these massive taiko drums and the Doof Warrior is hooked onto these big bunjee cords as he plays an enormous guitar. Oh, and he also shoots flames out the neck of the guitar. Yeah, he-he does that too. And sometimes, when Furiosa has to stop her rig to make repairs or so that the engines can cool down, the camera will pan or a character will look over and the evil sound of the guitar looms in the distance. It keeps you on the edge of your seat and keeps you dreading our heroes being captured by Immorton Joe even when you're not in the middle of an intense chase sequence. There's a scene in this movie involving a massive storm and I just could not believe my eyes. There are a few moments in this movie where I couldn't believe my eyes and just laughed and clapped in a moment of "Wholy crap, I can't believe that just happened". For example: A war boy jumping off the back of a huge rig, with two explosive staffs in his hands, landing on the hood of a car behind the rig blowing it up along with himself-cut back to the top of the rig and his fellow war boys are criss-crossing their fingers and praying, saying that he will be born again in Valhalla, a place where war boys serving Immorton Joe in battle supposedly go after dying. A vehicle lifting up off the ground and getting torn apart in mid air by an enourmous gust of sand and wind, a buzzard spiked car flipping up backwards and the shot going into slow motion so we see at the top of the vehicle is a guy just flipping around in mid-air. A war boy getting flung off the back of a vehicle and smashing into the front of Nux's car as Max looks back in horror, a crew of rock riders flying up off of the dunes over the rig in an intricate pattern throwing bombs at the rig as it is ingulfed in fire. Polecats swinging back and forth on long poles based on moving vehicles carrying chainsaws and explosives and snatching people up and throwing themselves onto other moving vehicles. The action in this movie blew my face right off of my face and still don't know how some of these shots were accomplished. I love how insane and rough this movie is but this movie isn't only about the action. It gets really emotionally powerful especially when it comes to Charlize Theron's character of Furiosa and her mission to lead the five wives to a place she remembers from her childhood as the Green Place. And there are few moments that really reflect how mad the world has become. Like a war boy announcing to the armada of persuit vehicles that he had a baby brother "and he was perfect, perfect in every way" after a mechanic removes an unborn baby from a dead woman and says he would have been perfect if the mother had stayed alive just another couple of days or so. And I love a scene in which Max refuses to let Furiosa and the five wives in the war rig because the armada is coming, but only expresses intrest when Furiosa asks him about his muzzle. "You want that thing off your face!" This is a movie that is required viewing for any fan of good action filmaking. You owe it to yourself to check out Mad Max: Fury Road.
