  The Force Awakens

Movie Review by Pace

So The Force Awakens is in theatres, finally, pretty much everyone loved it, I've seen it twice and I'm ready to talk about it. :)

But first, a SPOILER ALERT is in order. I am going to talk about this film in full detail talking about all the plot twists, the reveals and all that, so yes. SPOILER ALERT

And also, this article is written and targeted for people who have already seen it. So, even if you just don't really care about spoilers, I would consider watching the movie first, before reading this. Alright now that that's out of the way, let's talk about one of my favorite movies of all time!

So The Force Awakens starts out with the traditional Star Wars opening scroll which I was very happy they did. Because I was kind of scared that it wouldn't be included in the movie. But I was so glad it was and I completely got the goosebumps when "a long time ago in a galaxy far far away" came up and then it was like duuuuundunununnndunununn with the star wars logo and everything. And in the opening scroll it says that Luke Skywalker is missing and from then we have one of my favorite scenes in the entire movie actually. Where we are introduced to 3 of my favorite characters, that of Poe Dameron, BB-8 and Kylo Ren. And this scene is just so great but one thing that some people have a problem with, I guess is that it's too familiar to Star Wars in 1977. In the 1977 Star Wars Princess Lea has a piece of information that will help the rebels and so she gives it to R2-D2 because she knows she's going to be captured by the Empire and so R2-D2 has to get this information to the rebels via finding someone on the desert planet, Tatooine. In The Force Awakens Poe Dameron has a piece of information that will help the rebels and so he gives it to BB-8 because he knows he's going to be captured by the First Order and so BB-8 has to get this information to the rebels via finding someone on the desert planet, Jakku. But seriously, I have zero problem with that. I love this scene and one of the parts that is just like the greatest thing ever is when Poe shoots at Kylo Ren and he just stops the blaster bolt mid-air with the Force. That was awesome, I loved it, great idea there.

And then we also get a great intro to Finn's character. When Kylo Ren orders the stormtroopers to kill all the civilians of the town on Jakku and they all start firing, theres a slow zoom in to one of the stormtroopers. He's not shooting and.. seriously. John Boyega is amazing in this movie. You could tell his emotion even from inside the helmet. Just from the way he stands and moves you can tell how he feels about being in the First Order, and one of his friends swiping a bloody hand over his helmet was a great touch as well. Finn and Poe's relationship is amazingly believable and well done too. The scene in which Poe and Finn are escaping from the Star Destroyer is pure genious.

And there's one character that I haven't talked about yet that I thought, completely stole the show in terms of acting. And that character is Rey. Rey was, for me, the most interesting character. We know her family left her (Luke Skywalker???) and I'm excited to see where that goes. And also, Finn's not the one who is presumably going to be trained in the ways of the Force in the next couple movies as I and pretty much everyone was thinking because of the shot in the trailer where we see the beginning of a fight between Kylo Ren and Finn. But rather Rey! Finn starts fighting but is quickly bested and then Kylo Ren is trying to take Luke Skywalker's (and Anakin's before him) lightsaber with the Force but he's having trouble. It shoots up out of the snow but goes right past him and flies into Rey's hand and we now see that Rey is the new Jedi of this film, not Finn. (that was an awesome moment) And I was talking with my dad about this and he said that he thought it unbelievable that Rey was able to beat Kylo Ren in a lightsaber fight when she had no training. But really, Kylo hasn't had much training either. After the fight, Snoak says to bring him to me and I will complete his training. The only reason Kylo Ren has never been beaten before and is seen as such a powerful being is because he's never even been challenged before. The stormtroopers and citizens of the galaxy see his lightsaber and force powers and instantly quiver down since he's one of the only force-sensitive people left. In reality, Kylo Ren is young and untrained. And his lightsaber perfectly reflects that. It really does look like it was made by someone innexperienced. And some people didn't like that Kylo wasn't an all powerful, evil guy I guess, but for me it added so much character to Kylo unlike Darth Vader who, while one of the best movies villains of all time, in the first film was really not that well developed. I mean, it wasn't until The Empire Strikes Back that we really started to see some real emotional weight to that character.

And I love all the little things you see Rey do that builds up to the revelation that she is full on Force-sensitive. Like the little thing with the weird green goo that she turns into bread. When Finn and Rey are escaping from the Tie Fighters and Rey pulls that crazy stunt, flipping the ship so that Finn can shoot the Tie Fighter and after on she says "I don't know how I did it!". Also, side note, the scene where they're running towards a ship and Finn says "what about that one", and Rey goes, "that one's garbage", the one they're running towards blows up and Rey's like "the garbage'll do" and it pans over to.. the Millennium Falcon. I literally jumped in my seat I was so excited. That was such a great reveal and it was almost like J.J Abrams was pausing for applause with the length of the shot. (Back to the point) You don't actually see Rey really do something with the Force until she commands the guard to let her go ( "and drop your weapon" "and I'll drop my weapon" 'clank' :) ). And it takes her like three tries. So I don't think it was suddon. It was expertly built up to and done very subtly too. I didn't even realize the flying trick as a clue towards Rey being force sensitive the first time I saw the movie. It really made sense to me when she was really force sensitive in the end fight.

Speaking of the end fight, good God! This is a really great fight. I mean really, the whole sequence, Finn's failure included. When Kylo Ren twists his lightsaber so that the hilt cuts into Finn's shoulder I was like, yes! They actually used the hilt. I was kind of worried that the hilt would just be something for the sake of having a new lightsaber design but I was very happy with how it was utalized. And it was really great how, when Rey starts fighting she's pretty much fleeing from Kylo until she is backed up against the cliff and Kylo mentions the Force and Rey stops and goes, "the force". She closes her eyes, focuses and then opens her eyes to beat Kylo Ren. That was a great story arc there, and I'm sure we'll see more of that in the next movies as it looks like Luke is going to train her. Can't wait. And I also love love love how Kylo Ren is pounding his stomach to punch out blood from his blaster wound from when Chewie shot him. And that leads me to another thing I need to talk about. You know what it is. It's Han's death.

This is truly the most heart-renching scene that has been in a movie in 2015 I think. It's the combination of how Han was really just trying to bring his son to the light side for him but also for Lea and how he swipes Ben's face as he falls showing how he still loves his son and the incredibly amazing acting by Daisy Ridley and John Boyega with their characters' reactions but oh, my God. None of these things even compare to Chewbacca's scream. It literally scared me, it was so good. The gravity of the situation, the horror. Han Solo just died! It was so well done and I'm literally welling up just thinking about it. Great scene, definitely one of the best. And a great line exchange between Harrison Ford and Adam Driver on that bridge. Kylo Ren says that he needs to do something, but he's not sure that he has the strength to do it. Han tells him that he can help him and that he'll do anything to help his son. And you presume that it's to deny the First Order and Snoak and join the light side. But then he ignites his lightsaber through Han and says "Thank you". And you realize it wasn't to turn to the light, but to murder his father. That was awesome and tragic moment and convinces me further more that Kylo Ren is an awesome and tragic charcater as my friends continue to says he's whiny and has 'daddy issues'.

But the horrible and tragety-stuff aside I need to talk more about BB-8. He was one of my favorite if not my favorite character in the whole film. He's cute as hell but he's also cool. He can keep up with the human characters as their running, he's rolling along, making those turns, holding his own, he's awesome! And great comedy involved with his character as well. When he gives Finn the little thumb's up with the lighter I cracked up. And also how he's rolling around and getting bounced around the whole ship when their escaping from the Tie Fighter on Jakku so he shoots out those ropes to keep steady. And then he kind of swivels his head and gives the little satisfied-with-himself wurble sound. I loved BB-8. In fact I actually bought the "Star Wars: The Black Series" figure of BB-8 for my room, alongside Rey.

I think they look awesome and I'm really happy about them. I'm also strongly considering getting a Kylo Ren figure too.
