So this is going to be an article about something that's been on my mind a lot lately. What is that you ask? Oh, just the insignificance of human existence and the definition of the word accomplishment. Yeah...... I'm having kind of a crisis right now.
So recently I watched the last 7 epsiodes of Sword Art Online back to back, finishing episode 25 at 12:40 am (don't judge) and it, along with some other things, have brought some interesting questions/dillemas to my mind.
Is a virtual world any different from "the real world"? I mean, of course the answer is "Yes, Pace. I'm sorry to break it to you but the real world isn't like Star Wars and it probably won't ever be" I get it. But I mean in terms of the significance of what you accomplish. Some people think that games (mostly life simulation games) in which you do mundane stuff like the Sims or Animal Crossing aren't worth it because you could do those things in real life. But, truly, what's the difference between doing it in real life and in a virtual world? I mean, we're all gonna die someday and the world is going to end someday and then what? All of our accomplishments will be for nothing. Yeah, if I achieve happiness in my real life here, which is much harder to do than in a videogame, that's great, but if I can achieve that same level of happiness and possibly even a higher level of it more easily, why would anyone choose the real world. I would never choose the red pill! Go away Morpheas! I mean really, if you woke up right now in "the real world" and realized that your entire life had been part of a simulated world, you wouldn't say that the things accomplished wile living in that world didn't matter! And it definitely doesn't help that the things we accomplish in virtual worlds are much greater and more interesting than anything we can do in the real world. Right now I am playing a game called Xenoblade Chronicles and I am about to reach the 100 hours of gamplay mark. In the world of this amazing video game I have fought and defeated giant mechanical monsters, made negotiations to band together a large army to protect my homeland, strengthened the relationship of the members of my party, maxed out weapon arts, and discovered new hidden locations in the sprawling maps of the different sections of the massive and gorgious world. Nothing I've done in real life has even come close to topping anything I've done in pretty much any videogame!
So yeah! Basically I've been kind of an emotional mess lately.
But you know what? I don't care. I am going to keep living my life vicariously through fictional characters and worlds beliving that everything I do in those worlds mean even more than whatever the heck I accomplish in "real life". And I'm gonna do it without a care in the world! See ya
